Scurf (another name for dandruff) is a common condition.  A lot of people have it.  Why is it so bad?  It is bad because society has labelled it as a sign of not being clean.  But you know that is not the cause.  You can shampoo two times a day and still have dandruff.  So what really causes dandruff and what is it?

Dandruff is the excess shedding of skin flakes and cells from the scalp.  In normal people these remain so small that you can not see them without a microscope.  In people with dandruff, these small flakes clump together and make visible flakes.  Now, dandruff is not the only thing that can cause flaking.  So if you try some dandruff remedies without success, you may want to consult a doctor to make sure that is what you have.

There are 3 things required for dandruff.  The first is the natural oil on your skin.  The second is by products of the fungus and yeast naturally present on your scap.  The third is that you are just going to get dandruff.  That you are susceptible.

The fungus in question is called Malassezia globosa.  It eats the oils on your scalp and produces oleic acid.  This acid then irritates the skin and make it shed faster than normal.  Once in a while however, dandruff is caused by an allergic reaction.

The key to controlling the fungus is picking something that will bring the population of it under control.  You can buy man made shampoos with harsh chemicals in it.  You can buy corporate produced shampoos with natural ingredients.  Or, you can make your own remedies at home.

Any of these choices are likely to reduce or do away with your dandruff.  But you might want to make your own remedy at home so that you know exactly what is in it.
